Theoretical training:
Becoming a state-recognized nursing specialist requires three years of training and at least 2,400 teaching hours. The program concludes with a state examination consisting of practical, written, and oral components.
During the program, theory and practice alternate in blocks of several weeks. Lessons are organized into learning situations. These learning situations structure the lessons as thematic units representing professional action situations of a nursing specialist.

The training program focuses on the following:
– Planning, implementing, and assessing care and health-promoting measures independently and individually
– Counseling, training, and instructing people of all ages in need of care and their relatives
Working in a team and with other professional groups.
– Dealing professionally with difficult care situations
– Participating in therapeutic and diagnostic measures.
Situations provide opportunities to address professional problem situations and action-oriented problem-solving processes. In addition, there are overarching learning areas: German/communication, English/communication, politics, and religion.
Practical training:
The practical training comprises at least 2,500 hours, which trainees complete in various areas of nursing care. After an orientation placement at a training organization, such as a retirement home, outpatient service, or hospital, trainees cover the following areas:
– Acute care (400 hours):
– Outpatient care (400 hours)
Inpatient long-term care (400 hours)
Pediatrics (120 hours), and
Psychiatry (120 hours).
are compulsory assignments. These assignments are planned by the school in consultation with the practical training organization.
During each placement, the trainee must be supervised by a trained practical instructor for at least 10% of their working time. This is based on the practical curriculum, which is drawn up jointly by the company and the school.
Admission requirements
The following requirements are necessary for training as a nursing specialist:
School-Leaving Certificate
At least an Extended Secondary School Leaving Certificate
Or:
A lower
Language proficiency
German at the B2 level is required. C1 proficiency is preferred.
Additionally, trainees must present a medical certificate of fitness and an official certificate of good conduct, both of which must be no more than three months old, at the start of training.
Costs/Support Options:
The training is financed by all stakeholders in the care sector, the state of Lower Saxony, and the care insurance funds via a pay-as-you-go system. Therefore, it is free of charge for the trainee.
